How to Get More Feature Request Submissions

OpenIssue Team

You've launched a public board. It's branded, connected to Linear, and ready for feedback. But submissions are trickling in. Here's how to drive more feature request submissions.

Make the Board Easy to Find

The number one reason boards get low submissions is discoverability. Users can't submit to a board they don't know exists.

Place links where users naturally look for help:

  • In-app navigation — Sidebar link labeled "Feature Requests" or "Roadmap"
  • Help menu — Next to documentation and support links
  • Error states — When a feature doesn't exist yet, link to the board: "Want this? Request it here"
  • Onboarding emails — Introduce the board during user onboarding
  • Documentation footer — Persistent link across all docs pages

Prompt at the Right Moment

The best time to ask for feedback is when users are engaged with your product:

  • After a user completes a workflow: "How could this be better?"
  • When a user searches for something that doesn't exist: "Suggest a feature"
  • In monthly product emails: "See what's new and submit your ideas"

Contextual prompts outperform standalone links.

Seed the Board with Issues

An empty board doesn't invite participation. Before sharing, seed it with 10-20 existing feature ideas from your backlog. Users who see an active board are more likely to contribute than users who see a blank page.

Seeded issues also give users something to vote on, which is an easier first action than writing a submission.

Lower the Barrier

Make submissions easy:

  • Don't require account creation to browse (let users see the board freely)
  • Keep submission forms simple — title and description are enough
  • Don't require categorization — your team can triage after submission

Respond Quickly to Early Submissions

The first users who submit are testing whether anyone is listening. Respond within a day — even if the response is "Thanks, we'll review this." Fast responses signal that submissions matter and encourage repeat contributions.

Share Wins

When you ship a feature that was requested on the board, announce it. Users who see that submissions lead to shipped features submit more. The board becomes a proven channel, not a suggestion box that disappears into a void.
