Public Board Analytics: Measuring What Matters

OpenIssue Team

A public board isn't just a feedback channel — it's a data source. Every submission, vote, and status change tells you something about your users and your product. Here's how to read that data and act on it.

Submissions Over Time

Track how many submissions your board receives per week or month. The trend tells you:

  • Rising submissions — Users are engaged and discovering the board. Your feedback loop is working.
  • Flat submissions — The board may need more visibility. Check if it's linked from your app and docs.
  • Dropping submissions — Either users are satisfied (good) or disengaged (bad). Cross-reference with churn data.

A healthy board sees consistent submissions with occasional spikes after product updates or new user cohorts.

Vote Distribution

Look at how votes distribute across issues:

  • A few issues with many votes — Clear priorities exist. Your top items are obvious.
  • Many issues with few votes — Demand is fragmented. Your users may have diverse needs, or your issue titles may be too specific to attract votes.
  • One issue dominating — A critical gap exists. Address it or explain why not.

Vote distribution also reveals user segments. If feature requests cluster around specific themes, you're seeing demand by use case.

Response Time

How quickly does your team respond to new submissions? Track the time from submission to first reply or status change. Fast response times encourage more submissions. Slow responses signal that the board isn't monitored.

Aim for first acknowledgment within 48 hours. Even "Thanks, we'll review this" counts.

Issue Resolution Rate

What percentage of submitted issues eventually ship? Track:

  • Shipped — Issues that moved to "Done"
  • Declined — Issues marked "Won't Do" with an explanation
  • Open — Issues still in backlog

A healthy board resolves or addresses most submissions over time. A growing backlog of untouched items signals a process problem.

Engagement by Source

If you track how users find the board — in-app links, documentation, marketing site, direct URL — you learn which channels drive the most feedback. Double down on what works.

Acting on the Data

Use board analytics in your product planning:

  • Review top-voted items at the start of each planning cycle
  • Monitor submission trends after product launches
  • Track resolution rate monthly to ensure the board doesn't become a graveyard
  • Share engagement metrics with your team to maintain momentum
